Welcome to the GEMS Chicago Soundlab!
Students at GEMS World Academy-Chicago have been recording their stories and posting them as podcasts on this site. This experimental youth podcasting effort offers students a chance to explore different types of technology, examine how stories are constructed and hone their active-listening skills.
The third-graders recorded stories about episodes from their own lives. They crafted these during a recent unit on storytelling, which examined how stories are built and why they are important. Some of the episodes recounted in the podcasts are a trip to Navy Pier, an unexpected encounter with a bear, and a skiing trip to Italy.
Seventh-graders recorded reflections about Project Empathy, a semester-long global service project that has them creating content and then distributing it to places in the world with little or no access to the Internet.
Soon, 2nd graders and language students will be gracing the site with their latest recording efforts.
The students record the stories and scripts at GEMS, reciting them into a microphone and then editing them using the software program, GarageBand. After students listen back to their recording, they decide what they want to change for the final version.
The Sounds of GEMS section offers the audience a candid listen to the voices that resonate throughout our space. Captured at our weekly assemblies and in classrooms throughout the building, this section is for the spontaneous joy that permeates our building.
We hope you come back often and enjoy our Soundlab!
